Hello welcome back to my blog, today I will be blogging about this weeks reading.
This week in reading we red a text about a Maori Leader called Hakaraia. This book was very interesting it had a lot of different subjects in it like building hospitals and schools, becoming a christian,a War and even his death.
In the beginning, we got a little summery of what had happens to the People of Waitaha, which was pretty sad and then under that was a paragraph about The Return, so basically this paragraph talked about Mahika (Hakaraia) coming back to Aotearoa and how he learn’t how to write at a mission school in North land and eventually converted to becoming a christian.
Then on the next page, it talked about The Tipuna of Waitaha iwi (the chief, Hei and his son) Arrived in Aotearoa and claimed land for his decedents, some of the land had forests, soil and crops and many eels in some of the rivers they claimed.
Then the next pages of the book were about Hakaraia being a Preacher and a peacemaker and the Mission station, school and hospital he built, then it talked about the land that was Promised to his tribe (the Waitaha People) since they had to flee inland to escape the warring tribes.
After that the next paragraph was Titled the new king, and this was when large areas of Maori land was getting sold off to European Settlers, often without consent of all owners,And there was other problems as well as Maori people dieing because of Pakeha diseases, like small pox and Measils. Then in 1860, A truce was eventually declared a truce, but then the government raised a big army. And by 1863, the country was at war!.
Then the last 4 pages of the Text talked about the War, the next page was Headed Battle at Pukehinahina, this part of the text was very meaningful, it was about the first attack and how Maori actually won against the attack and how all of them had red the bible and it said to Love your enemies, so they gave them Water. And there was over 100 wounded or dead soldiers on the British side.
ON THE RUN
This part was when the Narrorater told us about how Hakaraia knew that the British wouldn’t give up attacking after they’re defeat and would eventually come back with another hit. So he called his Te Arawa whanau to support, and they did so by building a new Pa called Te ranga. before the Pa was finished, the British attacked and this time they killed over five hundred defenders! and most of them realated to Hakaraia. But fourtunetly Hakaraia, his son and a few other survivors escaped into the Kaimai Ranges overlooking Tauranga. Then in May 1865,as a punishment the British government confiscated large areas of Waitaha land. But Hakaraia and his small group of survivors would never surrender, and now another time the British sent a large force of troops to hunt down Hakaraia, but yet again he escaped and moved to a farther island.
Then the last Paraghraph was about how they lived until 1870 when the British sent two diffrent forces of soliders to do the job. These soliders finnaly tracked down Hakaraia and his mate Te Kooti and some other followers. Then the finnal attack was describe to be like”a mob of horses racing”.Te Kooti escaped, but Hakaraia was sadly killed.
FORGOTTEN & REMEMBERED
Hakaraia was celebrated for his peacemaking and Christian community,Hakaraia was also once the Maori leader of the Bay of Plenty. But years later after his pass his name was barely mentioned. Now, Hakaraia is being remembered as a principled man who turned to war only because he thought peace was no longer possible. And 150 years later, a carved image of Hakaraia sits on the site of the battle to mark the anniversary.
Then after ALL OF THAT we did a create and a follow up task.
Here they are:
And here’s my follow up questions:
what would you ask Hakaraia if he was still alive?
